I teach American Sign Language in high school. One of the important elements in ASL is facial expression- receptive and expressive. At the beginning of the year, students are reluctant to sign in front of others, give or receive feedback or have anyone "looking at them". Most students have a Fixed Mindset. ASL certainly requires a Growth Mindset to excel! After watching the G.M video, I can see how important it is to actually present the G.M. to them. I would like to use the graphic model to display in my classroom. My students just completed a project "Technology for the Deaf". They were given a rubric and paired with a peer. They had to assess/grade the peer's project according to the rubric and then indicate an area to be improved and an area of strength. Once that was complete, they had the opportunity to make changes based on the feedback, before submitting it for me to grade. That was a bit of a "not yet" approach. The "not yet" idea by Dweck is really a game changer for students. Basically, with a Growth Mindset, praising the process/success/effort, students are empowered and motivated instead of at a dead end with a loss of confidence. Learning to give and receive feedback, respectfully and honestly, supports the Growth Mindset.
